The sport of ice hockey has filled many players lives with joy, passion and a large sense of accomplishment. Our many decades, the protection from injury has been at the forefront of teams and player minds, resulting in the better equipment to save and prolong players sporting lives.​​ Concussion is still one of the leading injuries among both amateur and professional players, despite mandatory hockey helmets. Concussion injuries can terminate the players hockey life, and may contribute to long term medical problems in later life. Hockey helmets must be tested and certified to be sold in most markets.

CSA is the testing agency in Canada. HECC in the USA, and CE in Europe. HECC certification is only valid for 6 years after which, HECC can re-certify the helmet for use. There are no time limitations set in Canada and Europe on the use of hockey helmets.

University of Virginia Tech tests hockey helmets independently and use more type of tests than many of the certifying agencies do, resulting in a valuable indication of various helmets capability in protecting against concussions. They test new helmets upon release by the manufacturer, and all their rating are available online.

About Inertia Research

Inertia Research was founded by Sean Hyland, who conceived the idea of developing hockey helmets since 2021. With over 40 years of experience in developing successful engineering solutions for the automotive and motorsports industries, Sean recognized the need for improved safety measures in hockey, one of the most popular sports in North America.

His expertise in engineering and commitment to innovation are the driving forces behind our company's dedication to player safety.

 

Currently, his only project is to develop a hockey helmet which provides better protection for the players against concussion injury. Developing better concussion protection in hockey helmets will involve utilizing multiple materials together, and finite element design to manage the impact energy and dissipate it to minimize head injury trauma.

Computer simulation and impact testing will confirm our development path every step of the way. For professional players, we envision a custom-built helmet, fitted to the exact shape of the players head, by utilizing 3D scanning technology. The result will be a tailored helmet result, which may add significantly to the players’ career.
